We have received a message from a West Ashling resident to say that last night at 23:09 their ring door bell picked up three hooded men checking cars and vans with torches in Heather Close. His partner looked out of the window and saw that the men were looking into a motor home, a work van and a number of cars. The resident believes that it is likely they will be back as it was clear they were 'casing' the cars / vans. The resident considers that the men may well be back as he has seen this kind of behaviour before. Many thanks to the resident for taking the time to report this....

DITCH THE PROBLEM – Riparian Ownership
Following feedback received via Operation Watershed from community groups, particularly parishes, WSCC has updated some helpful information to guide landowners and community groups around the tricky subject of Riparian Ownership and Responsibilities. Keeping our watercourses well maintained benefits the community as a whole. If an area experiences constant flooding, this becomes a nuisance to the community, can restrict access to property, makes everyday living difficult and results in considerable expense and inconvenience for those that have been flooded. There are various resources including a short film, leaflet and posters as well as more detailed guidance that can be printed and used in your community. You can find the updated resources here: We do have a small amount of printed leaflets, if you would like some to circulate please contact Operation Watershed: Call to Action As part of your ongoing work to support reducing the risk of flood impacting residents in your local area, continued communication is key to raising awareness. The new material will provide useful practical information and guidance for landowners and residents. When you have the opportunity please would you promote to your community groups and individuals in your area that information is available via the website. A little more information in case you are not familiar with Riparian Ownership… If you have a watercourse, ditch, stream, river or culvert on or next to your land you are known as a ‘riparian owner’. Riparian owners are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of watercourses on their land to ensure that they are not a flood risk to other people or property. Well maintained watercourses can significantly benefit the local community by reducing flood risk and creating habitats for wildlife. The riparian responsibilities for landowners under law are to: - Ensure the flow of water is not obstructed or polluted - Maintain the bottom and sides of the watercourse (including managing any trees and vegetation growing on the banks) - Remove any obstructions, such as rubbish, fallen branches or garden waste - Maintain any structures (such as trash screens, culverts, weirs and mill gates) on it. It is important to promote and support communities to look after the watercourses in the county and this information will provide a helpful resource for them. Further information is available via the website and if you have a particular question relating to Operation Watershed please go to: Or email:

New community event hosted by Oakwood School brings festive cheer to the lonely this Christmas
Oakwood School have teamed up with the organisers of the very successful Emsworth Community Christmas to host a new community event within the local area of Funtington, opening its doors to people who may be alone and would enjoy Christmas Day in the company of others. Funtington Community Christmas will be hosted at Oakwood School and will be open to anyone who may otherwise be lonely on Christmas Day – young or old. The day will start at 10.30am where guests will be welcomed with a mince pie and festive drink, before enjoying a delicious traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. There will be festive fun, carol singing, music, presents and plenty of opportunity to enjoy being with others for Christmas before the day draws to a close at 4pm. Transport will be available for any guests who require lifts to and from the event. Clare Bradbury, Headteacher at Oakwood School, said, “We are at the heart of the community here in Funtington and it made absolute sense to support this wonderful initiative and offer the school as a venue. Many of our staff, families and friends will be involved in the preparation and running of the day, helping to make Christmas Day a day to remember – we will even watch the Queen’s Speech together!” From now until the Christmas Day event, the team will be busy fundraising and there is a JustGiving page set up for anyone wishing to donate, accessed from the Funtington Community Christmas page on Facebook. Money raised will be spent on transport, fresh produce, Christmas decorations and every guest will go home with a box of gifts put together by Oakwood children and handed out by Santa. Anyone wishing to volunteer to help or attend the Community Christmas Day should contact the school directly on 01243 575209....
